So I wanted to have a look at the relationship between the Q30 and the QX30 but considering the two vehicles are nowhere near existence yet that proves rather difficult!
So a compromise, to get an idea of Q30 vs QX30 I decided to take a look at the Mercedes A class vs the GLA. Dimensionally and mechanically the two are nearly identical, more importantly GLA and A-class are the QX30 and Q30.
Firs things first Q30 and QX30 will ride on the same MFA architecture and GLA and A, the platform was co developed between Infiniti and Mercedes. As for combustion nothing has been confirmed but I would not be surprised to see the Q30 and QX30 using the same 211 horse 4 cylinder doing their duty in the Mercs.
Here is where it starts to get interesting however, The GLA is 4417 mm long, 1805 mm wide and 1494 mm tall. Compared to the A class which is 4292 mm long, 1780 mm wide and 1433 mm tall. You can see although nearly identical the A class is much more svelte, a very Euro vehicle indeed and likely the reason NA will not see it.
As I said earlier in the piece mechanically the two are nearly identical except for a few pieces of technology. The GLA is offered in 2wd and 4wd variants, imagine the same for the QX30, it is also fitted with a few 'off road' features like hill descent and an off road specific mapping that adjusts gearbox and throttle to accommodate slippery surfaces. Again, imagine something similar for QX30.
Which brings me to my final thought. Clearly there is overlap between the GLA and A class, clearly there is overlap between the QX30 and the Q30. Mercedes decided to leave the A class at home and has only brought the GLA and CLA over to play, I wonder if Infiniti could adopt a similar strategy and leave the svelte hatch Q30 in europe and only offer the larger, er, taller QX30 to NA consumers?
