Infiniti Q30 vs QX30

So I wanted to have a look at the relationship between the Q30 and the QX30 but considering the two vehicles are nowhere near existence yet that proves rather difficult!

So a compromise, to get an idea of Q30 vs QX30 I decided to take a look at the Mercedes A class vs the GLA. Dimensionally and mechanically the two are nearly identical, more importantly GLA and A-class are the QX30 and Q30.

Firs things first Q30 and QX30 will ride on the same MFA architecture and GLA and A, the platform was co developed between Infiniti and Mercedes. As for combustion nothing has been confirmed but I would not be surprised to see the Q30 and QX30 using the same 211 horse 4 cylinder doing their duty in the Mercs.

Here is where it starts to get interesting however, The GLA is 4417 mm long, 1805 mm wide and 1494 mm tall. Compared to the A class which is 4292 mm long, 1780 mm wide and 1433 mm tall. You can see although nearly identical the A class is much more svelte, a very Euro vehicle indeed and likely the reason NA will not see it.

As I said earlier in the piece mechanically the two are nearly identical except for a few pieces of technology. The GLA is offered in 2wd and 4wd variants, imagine the same for the QX30, it is also fitted with a few 'off road' features like hill descent and an off road specific mapping that adjusts gearbox and throttle to accommodate slippery surfaces. Again, imagine something similar for QX30.

Which brings me to my final thought. Clearly there is overlap between the GLA and A class, clearly there is overlap between the QX30 and the Q30. Mercedes decided to leave the A class at home and has only brought the GLA and CLA over to play, I wonder if Infiniti could adopt a similar strategy and leave the svelte hatch Q30 in europe and only offer the larger, er, taller QX30 to NA consumers?

I though a QX30 would be useless, they already have the small QX50, why have an SUV SMALLER than that.
So what makes the QX30 different?

More ride height? Bigger engine?

more height. GLA and A class differ only in ride height, and minor dimensions. Merc left the A class back in europe for NA its possible Infiniti does the same with Q30.

OR maybe Q30 shows up not as the hatch back we are all excepting, in favor of something more shooting brake/fastback style?
So we can basically say that the QX30 will be like the poor mans Mercedes GLA in some ways, right?
Is one going to be more expensive than the other. It doesn't seem like you should have to pay anything different for essentially the same vehicle with just a bit higher ride height.

I also don't really get how the QX30 will fit in with all the SUVs that Infiniti already has in its line-up. Will it be perhaps a more affordable version of the QX50?
or maybe we get the q30 and we dont get the QX30 because the QX30 kind of could be matched with a QX50.

no there likely won;t be any pricing differences. Going off the Mercedes MFA cars, they are all clustered around the $30K MSRP.

I foresee QX50 growing to make room for Q30/QX30 just like the GLK is growing to accommodate the GLA...

I guess so. I still think there will be a price difference, maybe nothing significant, probably a few thousand more for the MB version over the Infiniti. When making monthly payments that extra few thousand wont be much of a burden
Maybe Infiniti doesn't have to make the Q30 and QX30 different from each other when you look at the Mercedes-Benz pics from above. They look very much the same but one with an ever so slightly higher ride height. Isn't Infiniti also sharing the platform with MB? So it looks like the two brands have very similar strategies here.

thats possible, the Q30 just seems to be slightly bigger than the Q50, a QX30 would be a true CUV, offering more versatility
So how does the QX30 compare to the QX50? hehe

smaller?

yep smaller, QX30 is GLA sized, QX50 is GLK sized... Q30 is going to be smaller than we think...
Q30 must be the same size as the Mercedes CLA but a little but chunkier around the corners and taller. So a CLA that had too much cake and got a random growth spurt.

or just an A class...

it really is just an a class, you can see the similarities in the both of them, maybe too similar for some
is the A class built on the CLA platform? Mercedes A class Wheelbase 2,699 mm (106.3 in) Length 4,292 mm (169.0 in) Width 1,780 mm (70.1 in) Height 1,433 mm (56.4 in) Mercedes CLA Wheelbase 2,699 mm (106.3 in) Length 4,630 mm (182.3 in) Width 1,777 mm (70.0 in) Height 1,437 mm (56.6 in) The wheelbase is the same but the length is noticeably different. I can't help but think the Q30 is likely even longer than the A class. Here is some unoffical measurements of the Q30 to compare The Infiniti Q30 measures 4460mm in length, 1470 mm in height and 1185 mm in width. Interestingly enough the height of all 3 of these are about the same They just difer from length and width So I don't really think the Q30 will be exactly like a A class in terms of sizing its probably better to gauge it off the CLA since its built on the same frame and platform.

I guess the best way to classify the Q30 is to say that it's Infiniti's version of an A-Class, it's the only 4 door hatch-like vehicle they will have. Not sure if we can call it a hatch since even Infiniti doesn't know how to categorize it.
Well it could compete with the A class but I don't think its really an A class with Infiniti shell and badging.

It's definitely not, but it's the closest thing to their version of the A-Class. They can use something smaller than the Q30, which will come in due time.
