Tiny crossovers are the hottest thing in cars right now, and any automaker that doesn’t have one is really behind the times.

Instead of putting a huge amount of R&D dollars into making its own small crossover, Infiniti is piggybacking on a Mercedes platform and has come up with the QX30, which is essentially a rebadged and restyled GLA.

The tester here is the 2017 Infiniti QX30 Sport model, which is the topline model that comes packed with performance upgrades and all the features drivers want except for one obvious omission. More on that later.

Something has me thinking that Infiniti wants to save AWD for the QX50 unless they're playing the whole game of having us wait longer for it to be available. But from a pricing stand point it just doesn't make sense to offer it without since we'll be paying what? Another couple thousand dollars?

For AWD, probably another 2-4 grand or so, can't imagine it would be much more though. Doesn't the QX50 already come with AWD

Yes that's about what it works out to on the QX30. $29k to start and $34k just breaks you into the cheapest AWD trim.

I guess depending on how sales go they might adjust it accordingly. AWD for right around the $30k mark will be a big move for a vehicle in this segment. But at the end of the day its numbers.

If they shift it up or down that few thousand dollars, it probably won't affect a lot of peoples decisions, but there are those set few that look at every dollar that they are spending and find it a great deal.

Infiniti could offer AWD first in places with snowfall as that's where they are generally more popular and people are more willing to pay the premium.

Very true, either that or they include more in the AWD trim such as standard winter equipment that you would otherwise have to pay more for. Of course that would be sold to Canadians and Americans living in northern states.

BMW will be joining the this segment soon with an X2. One big rival for Infiniti....we all know (or should know by now) how much BMW prioritizes AWD.

Looking at the X2 concept, and seeing the spy shots of it testing out in the snow, that thing sounds really beastly. Super throaty, crackles on shifts, and the turbo spool is pretty loud. It's going to be tough for Infiniti to rival it.

that goes for anything BMW and Infiniti, BMW always gets the upper hand overall. As much as some people hate to say it, most buy for image and BMW gets you image, Infiniti not so much.

but when you look lower down the scale to brands like Lexus vs Infinti... then it starts to get interesting.

When looking at Lexus vs. Infiniti it is a tough one but much like BMW, Lexus gets the upper hand. But now we also have brands like Genesis that could step into that game and make an impact.

Genesis currently doesn't have anything in this segment though and are more geared towards sedans. That being said, it could be a good idea for them to venture off into the segment and try to make a stand and ride the wave.

I can't see why they wouldn't. So far based on the cars I've been seeing from them, I think a CUV of some sort from them would be very promising.

It's only tough if you don't know what you want. When you really break down what each brand and potential models you can own from those brands, its easy to pick.

For some it starts and stops with design which easily swings them either to Infiniti or Lexus. That's sort of like my situation and because of that i'm heavily biased towards the Q30.

I think it's just getting in there and test driving them to figure it out. I think feel takes priority over design
